A bowed stringed instrument producing
an intense singing tone. It is based on an
18th-century viol and modified by the
addition of sympathetic (freely vibrating)
strings. The baryton was a favourite
instrument of Prince Nicholas Esterhazy,
patron of the Austrian composer Joseph Haydn
who, to please him, wrote many trios for
violin, baryton, and cello.
